History
On June 4, 2002, the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation invited prominent leaders of U.S. foundations, academic institutions, and government health agencies to participate in a lively discussion about the urgent problem of under-represented minorities in American health care.
This group of leading educators, thinkers, and policy makers put their heads together about how to improve diversity in the health professions. Among their recommendations, the #1 priority was to establish a central, online source of information about health career opportunities. The group enthusiastically embraced the idea of establishing "a national health careers Web site" -- and so, ExploreHealthCareers.org was born.
On November 1, 2006, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) assumed leadership of www.ExploreHealthCareers.org (EHC) because of its commitment to expanding efforts to recruit a diverse cadre of talented students into the health professions and to help educate students about the importance of a career in the health professions. ADEA, a known champion of multi-disciplinary diversity initiatives, works in collaboration with the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions (FASHP). Together, these groups represent the vast majority of all the health professions schools and programs in the nation.
On June 1, 2007, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) awarded ADEA a grant to administer and expand EHC -- a free, interactive health careers website designed to explain the array of health professions and provide easy access to students seeking information about health careers. Explore Health Careers is a joint initiative involving national foundations, professional associations, health career advisors, educational institutions and college students.
